365 news pictures.

I went to the see the Ghislane Howard exhibition the other day at the Imperial War Museum North. I read about her exhibition and was curious to know how it was executed. This picture on the left shows all the paintings on boards taken from newspaper photographs. I wasn't that impressed with how the work was presented but like the idea of painting a picture from the newspaper for everyday of the year. The paintings did have a court room sketch feel about them and alot were to do with war and suffering. They were about 80% figurative. The text accompanying the work said ; "the work raises questions as to whether we are over-exposed to images of conflict and if the way images are produced and published changes our way of looking at them". Howard said of her way of working "each day I choose one image from The Guardian, that strikes a chord with me and make a small painting. They have become a way of giving time back to these images and the individuals represented in them".
