Talya Baldwin, inspirations and influences.

This is an illuminated page from The Book of Kells. The Book of Kells (Irish: Leabhar Cheanannais)s an illuminated manuscript in Latin, containing the four Gospels of the New Testament together with various prefatory texts and tables. Folio 34r contains the Chi Rho monogram.[39] Chi and rho are the first two letters of the word Christ in Greek. In the Book of Kells, the Chi Rho monogram has grown to consume the entire page. The letter chi dominates the page with one arm swooping across the majority of the page. The letter rho is snuggled underneath the arms of the chi. Both letters are divided into compartments which are lavishly decorated with knot work and other patterns. The background is likewise awash in a mass of swirling and knotted decoration. Within this mass of decoration are hidden animals and insects. Three angels arise from one of the cross arms of the chi.
Duccio di Boninsegna, Apparizione di Cristo sul lago di Tiberiade. Duccio di Buoninsegna (c. 1255-1260 – c. 1318-1319) was one of the most influential Italian artists of his time. Born in Siena, Tuscany, he worked mostly with pigment and egg tempera and like most of his contemporaries he painted religious subject matters. He has influenced Simone Martini and the brothers Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti, among others.

This is from the a 15th-century illuminated manuscript. It’s from a French book of hours (Les Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry), and there’s one to signify each month of the year. This one highlights the grape harvest of September, with the castle of Saumer in the background.
